Federal law enforcement have arrested a 25-year-old man from Michigan who allegedly threatened to carry out a mass shooting against Christians should Donald Trump reclaim the White House.
According to the Department of Justice, Isaac Sissel is being charged with sending threatening communications to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) Threat Operations Center in West Virginia on Saturday, Nov. 2, three days before the election. Sissel planned to use a semi-automatic rifle in the mass shooting.
“I shall carry out an attack against conservative Christian, [sic] filth in the event trump [sic] wins the election. I have a stolen [AR-15] and a target I refuse to name so I can continue to get away with my plans,” Sissel allegedly wrote. Sissel continued: “Without a specific victim or ability to find the place I hid the gun, there’s not a thing the FBI can do until I complete the attack.”
Sissel was arrested on the morning of Tuesday, Nov. 5, just hours away from Trump being proclaimed the winner of the 2024 United States presidential election. He appeared in federal court that very afternoon.
His case is being handled by the FBI’s field office in Detroit, which is under the purview of the Justice Department’s Election Threats Task Force.
“Sissel said that he wouldn’t kill Trump, but if he knew someone was going to assassinate Trump that it was his duty to not intervene,” the federal complaint against Sissel reads. “Sissel said that he hated conservative Christians, who he enjoyed threatening.”
Trump’s supporters have been targeted by political violence in recent days. For instance, a shopper wearing a “Trump 2024” hat had his teeth broken by a stranger in Bath, New York. Trump himself had been a subject of least two assassination attempts. The first, in Butler, Pennsylvania, saw the president-elect and three supporters shot during a rally, one fatally.
On Election Day, at least 15 states deployed a total of over 250 members of their respective National Guards to deter any potential acts of violence or terror during the election: Alabama, Arizona, Delaware, Hawaii, Iowa, Illinois, North Carolina, New Mexico, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wisconsin and West Virginia.
Another 85 National Guard personnel were placed on standby in Colorado, Florida, Nevada and the District of Columbia, with the National Guard Bureau stating that these reserve Guard elements were tasked with cybersecurity and general operations.
The FBI also reported receiving several bomb threats against polling locations in some states, especially in the swing state of Georgia. Some of these were deemed “non-credible” and purportedly originated from Russia.
On the afternoon on Election Day, U.S. Capitol Police reported arresting one individual who “smelled like fuel,” carried a torch and had a flare gun in his possession. This incident prompted police to shut down all remaining scheduled tours of the Capitol building for the rest of the day.
