In speaking to the media following the failed assassination attempt on his life, Donald Trump claimed that his people heard through the grapevine that Joe Biden’s Justice Department is planning to drop its crusade to imprison him.
Biden was “very nice,” said Trump, in a phone call following the shooting, which reportedly left Trump supporter Corey Comperatore dead and two other rally attendees critically injured.
“We hear,” Trump continued, “that Biden is planning to drop the campaign” to lock Trump up, which prompted Trump to alter his planned speech at the Republican National Convention (RNC) in Milwaukee attacking Biden’s “corrupt, horrible administration” because Trump “want[s] to try to unite our country.”
“The doctor at the hospital said he never saw anything like this – he called it a miracle,” Trump went on to state. “I’m not supposed to be here. I’m supposed to be dead. I’m supposed to be dead.”
(Related: In case you missed it, Judge Aileen Cannon just tossed Trump’s classified documents case, ruling that the appointment of Special Counsel Jack Smith was unconstitutional.)
Even though many of his followers are upset at the agency for the way it handled the shooting, the Secret Service is still good in the eyes of Trump who offered nothing but praise for its efforts.
“A lot of places, especially soccer games, you hear a single shot, everybody runs,” Trump said about his rallygoers. “Here there were many shots and they stayed.”
As for the Secret Service, which led Trump off the stage as he tried to continue speaking to his supporters:
“I love them,” Trump said plainly, explaining that Secret Service agents told him they had to take him to the hospital for his safety. “They are such great people.”
The way the agents flew onto the scene like “linebackers” the moment the shooting started really impressed Trump, who in his interview rolled back his long-sleeve white shirt to show the audience a large bruise on his right forearm.
Trump suggested that he plans to attend Comperatore’s funeral as well as visit the other victims in the hospital in the coming days.
As all of this is happening, Special Counsel Jack Smith’s federal prosecutions of Trump remain stalled due to problems with the case. Another related prosecution levied by state-level Democrats in Georgia is also stalled.
The state-level conviction of Trump in Manhattan, N.Y., still stands, however it is subject to appeal. In that case, a sentence for Trump has not yet been handed down with the latest tentative timeframe for it to come being mid-to-late September.
Concerning the mystery surrounding Trump’s shoes and the statements he was making about them while the shooting was happening, Trump claims that “the agents hit me so hard that my shoes fell off, and my shoes are tight.”
“They took him out with one shot right between the eyes,” Trump added about how Secret Service took out the shooter. “They did a fantastic job. It’s surreal for all of us.”
“A lot of people say it’s the most iconic photo they’ve ever seen,” Trump bragged about the photos of him pumping his fist with a bloody ear. “They’re right and I didn’t die. Unless you have to die to have an iconic picture.”
In the comments, someone noted that Trump seems a lot more disciplined this time around compared to his initial run in 2016.
“After his brush with death and the need to bridge the gap between left and right, Trump has a golden opportunity to be presidential and unifying,” this person wrote.
