A shooting at an Indiana mall over the weekend left four people dead, including the shooter, but it could have been much worse.
According to reports, an armed lunatic began firing into a crowded food court at a mall in Greenwood, Ind., killing three and wounding two others, but thanks to an armed bystander, the outcome was not as bad as it could have been.
According to Jim Ison, Greenwood’s police chief, the shooter entered the mall with a rifle and several magazines and opened fire at a food court that was filled with customers. Police were called to respond to the incident around 6 p.m. local time, but the shooter was engaged by a good guy with a gun and killed. The good guy has not yet been identified, as of this report.
Early Monday morning, Johnson County Coroner Michael Pruitt identified those who had died as three males and one female. That includes the shooter, who police have only identified as an adult male. Their names are expected to be released later Monday at a 2 p.m. news conference.
Chief Ison previously stated Sunday night, before the coroner’s investigation, that those shot included one male and four females.
The coroner’s office is working with the Marion County Coroner’s Office on positive identification of those who died. Their identifies are expected to be released some time Monday morning.
One of the wounded was a 12-year-old girl, though her injury was not severe.
“IMPD said the armed bystander who shot the shooter is cooperating with police. The bystander is believed to have had a handgun and chose to intervene when he saw the shooting. Ison said the bystander, a 22-year-old man from Bartholomew County, was carrying a gun lawfully. Police have not shared his name,” the report continued.
“This has shaken us to our core. This isn’t something we’ve seen in Greenwood before. It is absolutely horrendous,” Ison said, adding that his police officers have trained for these kinds of scenarios and praised their response.
Greenwood Mayor Mark Myers released a statement on Facebook thanking the armed bystander.
“This person saved lives tonight. On behalf of the City of Greenwood, I am grateful for his quick action and heroism in this situation,” he added.
The city is a suburb of Indianapolis and has a population of around 60,000.
In recent days, Democrats who hate gun rights criticized the non-response of police officers in Uvalde, Texas, during last month’s horrific murder of 19 children and two adults at Robb Elementary School, using the incident in an attempt to debunk the “good guy with a gun” argument.
But in fact, what happened in Indianapolis is far more common than what happened in Uvalde.
“Among the most contentious subjects in the gun debate is the right of civilians to carry firearms and the effect such policies have on gun crime,” The Daily Wire reports. “The Supreme Court recently struck down New York restrictions on concealed carry permits, prompting widespread backlash from Democrats. New York Governor Kathy Hochul pledged to add numerous specific requirements to replace the vague ‘proper cause’ standard, including combing through [an] applicant’s social media history.”
After she was confronted about the effectiveness such policies have on reducing gun crime, which has skyrocketed in recent years thanks to far-left Democratic DAs refusing to prosecute criminals, when the data overwhelmingly indicates that concealed carry permit holders are very law-abiding compared with the general public and even law enforcement, Hochul, a Democrat, dismissed it out of hand.
“I don’t need to have numbers,” Hochul said. “I don’t need to have a data point to say this.”
So much for sensible policymaking that could actually save lives. With Democrats, the response is always ‘fewer guns.’
